2D Animation
College Project
Concept
The concept evolved from a backpacker journey across Europe, but this felt too conventional. The direction shifted towards a character-driven approach to strengthen engagement and emotional connection.
With Ireland as the target audience, the idea focused on a familiar cultural element. A carrot character was ultimately chosen for its expressive potential and ability to bring personality and charm to the animation.
CARR
- The carrot's expressive range enabled a strong character-driven narrative, using travel as a relatable theme with an unexpected protagonist.
- The story follows an explorer character who leaves an indoor setting to escape its fate and discover the world.
- A secondary vegetable character was introduced as a companion to enrich the journey and add dynamic interaction.
TOM
- A tomato was selected as a secondary character, reflecting another popular vegetable in Ireland.
- Despite limited suitable assets, a tomato design was identified as a strong visual match.
- This character was developed as the carrot's companion, supporting the narrative and adding personality.
Storyboards
The scenes were designed to blend imaginative scenarios from the carrot's perspective, as he tries to convince his friend to join the adventure. By narrating exciting travel experiences, Carr gradually persuades Tom to pack up and go.
The animation opens with Carr and Tom driving through Dublin, where a sign sparks the idea of traveling across Europe.
The scene shifts to a kitchen, where a mother leaves her cooking to attend to her children.
Carr comes to life, startled by the threat of being prepared as food, and wakes up Tom trying to convince him to escape.
Inspired by the outside world, Carr begins imagining a life of travel and freedom.
In the imagination they appear in London, exploring iconic landmarks such as the London Eye and Big Ben.
The journey continues in Amsterdam, where they enjoy a canal boat experience.
In Pisa, they enjoy local experiences and reinforce the sense of adventure.
In Paris, they explore iconic landmarks and cultural moments.
A map summarises their imagined journey across Europe, starting and ending in Dublin.
Back in reality, Tom is convinced to join the adventure, and both characters prepare to leave together.
Scenarios
The scenarios were designed to maintain visual continuity while adapting and combining vector assets to fit the narrative. The opening scene establishes Dublin as the setting, which is reinforced in the kitchen scene by showing the city through the window. Subsequent scenes depict imagined travel locations—London, Amsterdam, Pisa, and Paris—created by modifying and combining images, adjusting layers, and adding elements to support each city's identity and accommodate the characters. The journey is then summarised through a simplified map with selected icons and added motion elements, before concluding with a final globe scene, refined by removing and integrating elements to achieve a clear and cohesive composition.
